Laser Sailors, a photo from Bay of Plenty, North Island

Photographer's Note

Hi all.
These are Laser sailing dinghies captured at Ohope Beach just south of Whakatane.
NZ has a reputation of producing world class racing sailors and most start out in dinghy racing like this. Boat ownership is commonplace in NZ and with our relatively large coastline it is easy to see why.

The International Laser Class sailboat, also called Laser Standard and the Laser One is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy. According the Laser Class Rules the boat may be sailed by either one or two people, though it is rarely sailed by two. The design, by Bruce Kirby, emphasizes simplicity and performance. The dinghy is now manufactured by several boat manufacturers worldwide. (wikipedia)

I bet this is a very popular sport in your country. So much water and good weather! Interesting scene with the sails breaking the monotony of this immense ocean. The picture could be a tad sharper but overall is very good. Thanks Paul :-)

These guys look like moths fluttering on a silver sea.
Really good atmospheric shot.
The number on the middle laser is not lost on me, 888, as in bakes888, a mere coincidence or is it one of the family sailing this particular boat.
Nice shot.

The glimmerinf of the ocean is very unusual, but good, as if there are light source from the water. and yes the sail is like a blade of an exato knife . The sharpness and clarity is week due the difficult lighting as well as alot of zooming I guess. The Horizon is a bit split too much in the center. Other than that is rather successful shot. Thanks.

The glittering effect on the water from shooting into the sun is always a great attraction to me. The couple capsized almost seem to be just sitting to enjoy the show. I also like both bonus shots, which would both make good main posts.

this is a sight that is very much to my liking! The backlight creates a very pleasant atmosphere of the silver sea that matches these classic boats excellently. My compliments, the images in WS are also wonderful with these splendid reflections.

I have just critiqued Greg1949's last posts on sail ships and a post of feather with glowing water. Now I am looking at this wonderful photo of little sail boats on a glowing sea... You have made a very attractive graphical arrangement with the sails and the glittering water adds much to the impact of the image. I am very attracted by this light, but I find it extremely difficult to tame, so I admire much what you have achieved here.

Hello Paul,

The competitors had fitted all their sunglasses on their noses I think !!! Light which was not easy to manage and which you have to overcome well on this photograph giving one very special moment. The twinkling of the water gives the picture a very special atmosphere. The dark silhouettes of the sailor presents a sharp contrast with it.

Lovely shot, Paul. I like the partial "into the light" job here, which provides sparkles on the water and an interesting look. Nice "pattern shot" with the repition of the boats, too. All the technical stuff looks good. Nicely cropped in the exposure or the pp, too.

P.S. I used to love sailing Lasers in San Diego, especially on a windy day when they would get up on their "planing hull" and literally fly over the water.

The bright light makes it seem like they're sailing in a field of ice and snow.

Not only the coastline but the lotsa wind, evident here, helps to kaje good sailors. Those that survive that is. Big winds and little boats make the smallest erroe quickly apparent.
