Sir Edmund Hillary
New Zealander, Edmund Hillary alongside Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was the first people to climb to the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953. Before reaching fame and glory from the success of Mt. Everest, he was a pilot of flying boat Catalina planes and a beekeeper. This monument, in Mt. Cook village shows a young Edmund Hillary gazing out towards the tallest peaks of his homeland; behind the cloud on the left is Mt. Sefton of my previous image and to the right is Mt. Cook and Tasman. This life size bronze statue serves as a tribute to one of the greatest heroes of mountaineering. Sir Hillary still lives in New Zealand, and this year at the age of 87, travelled to Antarctica on his latest voyage.

Hi Matt. I always claim my Kiwi heritage when he comes along!! He was a bit of an inspiraion to us all as shoolkids, showing folk from this little far away place can do things too. Very sharp photo with excellent POV. I like your alpine series a lot. TFS. Murray.
PS when in Auckland a few months ago, my colleague took me to one tree hill and by chance Sir Edmund's son was there showing a guest around. He looks a lot like his dad in this one.

He was a great man, and your photo with the mountains at the background is doing him with a lot of respect…

Hello Matthew
Thank you for posting this image of the statue of Sir Edmund Hillary at Mt Cook village. I am a kiwi and Sir Edmund Hillary is my hero but I have never before seen a photo of this statue. I have since discovered that it was erected in 2003. In focus throughout - a pity about the cloud covering Mt Cook. A pity also that he is no longer with us. He was a hero not just for his mountaineering achievements but also because of all the good work he did for the people of Nepal.

this is another intresting place with both Mont cook and Sir EH. As rock climber too, it's surely a place full of emotion, when you can see it.
