Flying with the Carcará, a photo from Parana, South

Photographer's Note

I have this photo as one of my favorites and like the last post it is much in the treknature spirit, but it also fits very well to trekearth and I hope that you will like to see it. I have been trying to capture birds flying and its not an easy work. Here, I was lucky to have the background playing to me, giving the sensation that I am flying with the Carcará. This bird is commom to the "Campos Gerais", in the second plateau of Paraná state, a region with open fields with lots of small bushes, named capons. This falcon is very active here specially after the harvesting of soybean, when they stay on the ground to catch some insects and everything moving, or dying, like little calfs with any problem, or rats, etc.
Carcará, in english "crested caracara", measures around 60cm tall or 23 inches. It is a falcon of the "Polyborus plancus" species.

Something about it:

The Crested Caracaras’ preferred habitat is open. These birds reside in South America, Central America and the southwestern United States and Florida.
Caracaras hunt live food on the ground or take food from other birds. The caracara is the most terrestrial bird in the falcon group. It spends a great deal of time on the ground. Unlike other members of the falcon family that do not construct nests, the caracara builds a stick nest. The Crested Caracara usually feeds on carrion, but they will take advantage of any food opportunity by eating small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, turtles, fish, crab, eggs, insects, worms, and nestling birds.

O ângulo de visada cria enorme intimidade com a vista altiva da ave de rapina, deslizando sem esforço com suas penas esticadas sobre a planície; o foco preciso na ave e o fundo apenas sugerido criam uma visão artística da campina, com estrias oblíquas, desfocadas e multicoloridas de floresta e campo aberto, ao mesmo tempo que reforça a noção de acuidade e precisão da rapinagem, como representado na nitidez do tema. Enquadramento, cores e iluminação fabulosas. Uma foto difícil, que deve ter sido fruto de muito trabalho. Está de parabéns! Merece uma 400mm L com extender 2x, hehe.

Hi, Jose. This is a splendid shot. You give us the impression we are flying with the bird over the landscape and you've ahd the good idea to leave plenty of space in frotn of the animal. The sharpness is excellent and the background is blurred just enough to let the main subject stand out. A very good picture.

This is a very impressive shot Zeca and must have been difficult to achieve. The bird is pin sharp and the blurred background helps it to stand out against it. Very well done

uma foto interessante essa, e imagino que difícil focar no pássaro, devido ao reduzido tamanho e velocidade, pelo menos enfrento bastante esse problema em fotos de aviões aqui, de cada 10 apenas 2 salvam... mas está ótimo!

My immediate reaction was how did you take this shot? Yes, as you said it gives a strong feeling that you were in flight as well. A beauty! Technically as well, this is superb with the OOF BG & the pin sharp Carcara and the placement of it with the soaring wings to the left, flying into the frame...wonderful!

Hehe, a 300mm esta de volta e funcionando com perfeicao. Voce tem razoa, estas fotos de wildlife e especialmente quando em acao sao bem dificieis de ser feitas com perfeicao. this is a truly great capture, with the flying by Carcara' perfectly captured and placed in the sensor of your camera. The blurred bg is just great to let the bird shining through the frame. there's nothing to criticize here as everything looks perfect with a great exposure, colours and sharpening. Great job!

This is an excellent POV , this fellow must have flown right past you!! It is very difficult to capture birds in flight, I must have taken at least a thousand photos and I only have two or 3 worth keeping. As you remark, you were also have an excellent background, many of my birds are lost in the grass, guess I'll have to try mountain climbing for birds.
