Photographer's Note
Dancers from Oregon Ballet Theatre (OBT) came to Caldera in Sisters, Oregon for a week of rehearsal, exploration, and creativity, At the end of the week they presented three intimate performances with audience and performers only an arm's length apart. During a question and answer session one of the dancers commented on that it was rewarding to be able to see the audience's reaction instead of dancing in the isolation imposed by the bright stage lights and the black hole of the orchestra pit. I also found it exciting to be so close that I could see clearly the physical strain of the ballet and the incredible definition of the dancers' bodies.
First the group of seven dancers demonstrated elements of choreography for next spring's ballet season that principal dancer Anne Mueller developed during the week. During the question and answer session, she said that choreography requires a visual image; part of hers came from a series of woodcuts used to illustrate a story called, 'Never Pet a Burning Dog'. The music was written by the the 10 year old son of a Russian composer. The director had chosen the music because he was looking for music that was not famous. He said he may have been cheating a bit because the boy probably would have been famous had he not drowned when he was 12.
Finally the group, now dressed in costumes rather than leotards, presented their version of the Girl from Ipanema. This photo is from that part of the performance as it took me awhile to get dialed in on shooting position and settings.

Hi Pat,
Joy of dancing shows well on this, even though I could never really understand ballet. Perfect timing with the posture as tall as it gets. The man is well placed too, sort of peeking from the right edge. Nice, harmonous colors.

Hi Pat,
Beauty, elegant, classy...
It makes me think of a couple of things, Degar's painting of all the ballet dancers.
The position of the dancer is so perfect it looks like a little doll or figurine inside of a music box.
My only minor comment is the boy is a little awkward in there, half cut off. But I understand, you did what you can. In this case you might be able to crop it a make it‘s a extra long vertical format without the boy.
