Whirling Dervishes' Grace..., a photo from Basse-Normandie, North

Photographer's Note

Every year, the International Fair of Caen offer a beautiful journey to the vistors... This year, we follow the steps of Marco Polo, through a long trip : "The silk road".
Point of departure: Istanbul.
Unfortunately, I don't know this city which must be fascinating, so I enjoyed discovering a part of it through the paths of the exhibiting, always very enriching.
Superb photos by Serge Potier, reports... And a enchanting moment: the whirling dervishes, come specially for this special week.

Sama is the sacred gyrating dance of the whirling dervishes, and is a part of spiritual practices of the Sufism.
The dervishes, the arms crossed on the breast, the hands on shoulders, begin turning slowly on themselves then spread arms, right hand turned to the sky to harvest the divine grace, and the left hand turned to the ground to disperse it towards the ground.
The dance is like a prayer, an overtaking to the supreme union with God. In 2008, UNESCO proclaimed the "The Mevlevi Sama Ceremony" as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

A totally new exercise for me: try to retranscribe the movement and get something more "artistic" (I hope ^^).
Certainly not a total success, but I wanted to share this try ;o)

Tu es modeste, car pour un essai, je la trouve magnifiquement réussie. La photo est assez nette pour montrer les sujets et assez floue pour montrer le mouvement. Le noir et blanc donne aussi une belle atmosphère. Essai concluant, félicitations.

Bonjour Karine,
je ne devais plus passer mais celle-ci est très à mon goût et elle est extrêment bien composée ave ces 3 "élements". Le timing est bon et le traitement est excellent. J'ai beaucoup les les attitudes capturées et la personne de profil est particulièrement intéressantes.
Je te conseille de continuer dans ce style qui est peu présent ici et surtout qui change des cartes postales.
As-tu essayer d'autres réglages pour encore plus aller dans l'expérimentation ? Celà pourrait être le début d'une belle série.
C'est excellent.

Bonjour Karine,

Voilà un sujet que j'aimerais bien photographier. J ai en tête pleins d images sur ce sujet.
Bon choix sur le temps d exposition pour transmettre l idée du mouvement tout en conservant une certaine netteté.
Par contre, pour ce post, tu as peut etre trop compressé le jpeg car on voit des artefacts de compressions dans l arrière plan; ça ne concerne sans doute que ce post sur TE.

Le vignette attire et un clic sur l'image nous permet d'admirer ce superbe flou de mouvement.Un type d'image se mariant bien avec le B&W.

c'est surprenant dans ta galerie en effet mais un nouveau genre qui te reussi bien: c'est tout bon pour moi: un point net pour ne pas se perdre completement, un noir et blanc tout doux , on sent le mouvement (qui rend comme manchot les danseurs)
un cadrage judicieux...

et ben! Pour un essai je trouve que c'est particulièrement réussi! J'adore cette compo, bien équilibrée avec les trois derviches placés harmonieusement, aux tons gris nuancés (les artefacts je pense effectivement que c'est la compression jpeg pour le web) et au mouvement juste flou comme il faut pour transmettre le mouvement et garder suffisamment de lisibilité. Bravo Miss K, j'espère qu'il y en a d'autres comme ça!

Un très bel essai rendant très bien le mouvement. Le noir et blanc lui va bien (je vais peut-être la revoir ailleurs -)). Quelques petits défauts dans l'arrière plan (tons foncés/tons clairs?)

Dear Karine,

I prefer this one to the later one than you posted today. The second one seems to lack of any 'focus', whereas in this one, the dancer is better defined, while the movements are blurred to give a 'twirling' effect. I feel thsi scene is like a fragment of one's imagination or dream....

sufi dance pics are always magical,and this one is no exception.you have captured the magic and the divinity very well.nice choice for b n w.great framing to include 3 humans.and i like the fact that 2 of them are back to your camera.
