Photographer's Note

On 20 July 1944, an attempt was made to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Führer of the Third Reich, inside his Wolf's Lair field headquarters near Rastenburg, East Prussia. The plot was the culmination of the efforts of several groups in the German Resistance to overthrow the Nazi-led German government. The failure of both the assassination and the military coup d'état which was planned to follow it led to the arrest of at least 7,000 people by the Gestapo. According to records of the Führer Conferences on Naval Affairs, 4,980 of these were executed.

On the picture statue on the courtyard at the Bendlerblock, where Stauffenberg, Olbricht and others were executed.

Now there is The German Resistance Memorial Center and the street name is Stauffenbergstraße, after name of one of the plot's leader.

Edit for Andrew (ACL1978) and other, who don't understand german: on this memorial plaque, there is written:

"You did not bear the shame. You resisted. You bestowed an eternally vigilant symbol of change by sacrificing your impassioned lives for freedom, justice and honor"

Eliza, nice presentation of the statue and surroundings, with good DOF that brings the monument into focus well. Interesting subject as well - I wish I could read German, as an exact translation of that would be fascinating. I find it interesting that Hitler's name doesn't appear, despite the event this commemorates.

Hi,

Very nice composition. I think you made the right choice using Black & White. Like many, I've seen a movie on those events. I didn't know there was a memorial to remember those men.

¦wietnie sfotografowana statua upamiêtniaj±ca miejsce egzekucji odwa¿nego cz³owieka. Ale generalnie Stauffenberg jednak by³ pruskim militaryst± i kto wie czy gdyby zamach siê uda³ , i do w³adzy doszli by realniej my¶l±cy niemieccy genera³owie, czy by wojna nie potrwa³aby d³u¿ej.
