The inner side of the double doors of Santo António, dating from the 17TH century, are located off the West side of the fortified village of Almeida, a municipality in the District of Guarda, dominated by fortresses, plateaus and vast landscapes, is one of the most beautiful fortified towns across the Iberian Peninsula and is one of the twelve designated historic villages of Portugal.
The village is fully fortified has the shape of a Hexagon, polygon with six bastions, a perimeter that reaches two thousand and five hundred metres. The works that long benefited from the 18th and 19th centuries, made the current fortress on a nearly impregnable stronghold being a jewel of military architecture. Inside the fortification, it is worth visiting the matching set of houses, and numerous religious and civil buildings spread across narrow streets retain the atmosphere of other times.
