Photographer's Note

Abby is a professional Spoonologist ~ one of only a handful in the entire United States. Playing the spoons falls under the category of "Old Timey Music" and is very evocative of the mountains and Appalachia.

At first the idea of playing the spoons may seem overly simple, and something just about anyone can do if they have a pair of spoons handy. But in Abby's hands, a simple pair of spoons becomes "a "complex rhythm instrument."

A little history from Abby's website: "Spoons belong to a class of instrument called concussion idiophone, the oldest instruments known to man. Spoons themselves are prehistoric, there have been spoon players since around the invention of the spoon.

Many ancient cultures have played spoons. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all played spoons and a variation of the spoons called the rattle bones or the rhythm bones ... Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all played spoons and bones in their battle marches and some even speculate that human bones were used. During the crusades, when these armies were marching the clicking or the bones and spoons meant to their enemy that "the pagans were coming" and it was time to prepare for battle, or to even run and hide."

Abby busks (plays for cash tips) all over the country - from San Francisco to Chicago, Atlanta, Portland and New York. But we are lucky to have Abby as one of our regulars in the Asheville street music scene.

Yesterday afternoon, I caught Abby playing on the streets downtown with Banjo Ben. By her left foot, you can see a small shop bell. Any time someone puts some money in their bag, she steps on it, two pings of appreciation.

Abby is missing many of her teeth (for reasons unknown), and this gives her mouth a much older appearance than she actually is. Judging by her skin, I think Abby may only be in her late 20s, early 30s.

Abby and her spoons are a lyrical whirl of motion.

Please treat yourself to listening and watching Abby playing the spoons ~ it will amaze you!
