Stromness winds around the water front and many houses probably have better water access than road access. This is a typical sight - houses facing the water and a small boat dragged up beside the house. Some houses have their own hoist for lifting out boats.

Hi Ian
I like the soft pastel colours & lighting. Good sharpness and tonal range with excellent framing and composition. The fg dinghy makes a good focal point. Tfs!

Hi Ian,
Well balanced your view with houses, boat taken at low tide. Interesting colors contrast between green and grey, nice complements with yourWS, tfs.

Hello Ian,
Three equally good photos from the small town facing the sea. I have a slight preference for WS #1 for the best view towards the sea, the best view of a house and for the human presence.
Regards,
Gert

Hello Ian,
Three excellent photographs, this being my favourite, showing the character of Stromness.
I very much like how you have found a viewpoint where the receding buildings create such a fine sense of depth.
Do you get a detective series called 'Shetland', in Australia? It's very good series and your photographs rekindle the settings seen there.
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Ian,so there is a boat for every house,it seems a rule there and it's easy to understand in a village like this so close to the sea. 3 different and very nice perspectives, very well done as usual,i like it! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Ian,
A nice view of the small white boat against the slope, surrounded by the houses. We get a nice glimpse of the harbour in the right hand background also. Well captured and composed.

Private parking for the boat... Just my humor, Ian.
We see a seafront houses built upon an elevated mound protecting from storms and gales.
Fine view through towards the quay.
Wish you a nice weekend,
Ike

Hi Ian,
The repitition of the house is giving dynamism to the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the houses and of the stone walls. The light is giving good colors rensering. Have a nice day.

Hi Ian
Great trio of images with a strong sense of place. I really like them all, my fav, by a small margin is WS#2, very graphic with a beautiful boat adorned with green details. But I think the main shot gives us the best idea of the location. I also like the depth of field here, with the boat in the foreground and the houses receding into the distance.
Greetings from really wet this year UK!

Hi Ian
This looks like a nice relaxing village very close to the water line and seeing the stonehouses is like stepping back in time. Nice viewpoint with plenty of interest and I love the present of the small boat and the eye-popping green colour really give this a punchy finishing touch. Appreciate your extra pics and useful notes.
Best regards

Hello Ian,
At first sight the boat is a bit lost. But behind the corner we catch a glimpse of the sea. So the water isn't really far.
I see that most of the houses were built in a beautiful stone.
The flowers in the corner add more colour to the photo.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Ian,
These are quite charming stone buildings. I like the layering in the main entry.
