Photographer's Note

Ok, I know that I seem to have an obsession about ice... Even our friend Mohammad now calls me Iceman ;-)

But after showing some pictures about the destructive power of ice, I wanted to show something nice about it. So here are a couple of my favourite sculptures in this year winter's carnival. For those of you who do not recognize it, the one on the right is a can of Crown's kidney beans. I tought that was a very original subject.

Hope you enjoy it, and I promise to leave pictures of ice alone for a while :-)

C'est tres surprenant comme art, c'est aussi magnifique et ton cadrage ici est parfait. Surtout que la lumiere met tres bien en valeur les sculptures.

Bonjour Paul. These ice sculptures are indeed amazing! I find your use of light here to be very lovely. Another choice might have been to capture these individually, but we also appreciate seeing two of them at once.

Hi Paul, I have tried many times to visit ice sculptures. I have not get a chance yet. Your picture makes me feel that I have missed a lot. I should plan one next winter.
An excellent photo with many details. You have used the lighting conditions perfectly. Well done.

Well, Paul, no need to be apologetic in any way, these ice sculptures do make genuinely fine photographic subjects. The exposure was really well handled on this one, and the mixture of late-afternoon daylight and the artificial illuminations blends into a very appealing light setting. The can with the kidney beans is indeed an original subject for a sculpture. I only wish the top of the "snow crystal" shape of the left sculpture were not cut, but it's a minor detail. Nice one for your carnival series.

It is an incredible icy artwork, Paul, very creative and well executed. If I'll try it in Israel, it will melt within 20 minutes. Lighting is soft and excellent. Very well captured, beautiful shot.

Interesting and well made presentation of the ice sculptures Paul. Impressing work they do making them. It's a bit different to understand the scaling, the size of these sculptures. Nice work, excellent light..

C'est en aout qu'il faut venir nous les poster celles la, quand nous suffoquerons sous 35° !!!
Mais la vue est jolie, claire, bien composee et exposee, bien cadreee aussi quoiqu'un peu sec en haut et a gauche.

a great art work with ice/snow you show us,it's amazing and I do like this kind of works always,but pity that those great works will melted:(
very well light controlling you did,indeed a great result you reached,wonderful fading colors at all,and details are excellent,too.

j'espère qu'il y a du chocolat à l'intérieur des dragées.
C'est très original Paul, le cadrage permet d'apprécier deux oeuvres distinctes sous cette douce luminosité.

Magnifique cet art glaciaire. La photo est bien prise, très nette bien illuminée.
Je suppose que les haricots sont fondus maintenant, mais en attendant ce sont de bons sujets pour cette sculpture très réaliste.

C'est incroyablement beau !!! difficil de croire que c'est de la glace. Quel dommage que cette oeuvre soit obliger de subir les assauts du printemps .... Le cadrage est parfait aisni que la lumiere. On ne s'en lasse pas ....

Belle composition Paul, peut-être qu'un cadrage un peu moins serré en haut aurait été mieux, mais c'est très mineur. L'oeuvre est très bien présenté, de bons détails et une excellent profondeur, bravo.

Cette lumière est merveilleuse et donne un grand impact à cette sculpture bien curieuse. Ça ressemble à un pot de pilules... donc je comprends que vous en avez croqué une pour vous pencher sur cette composition aussi bien réussie. Merci du partage.

Sujets très esthétiques que tu as choisis là. La lumière artificielle se reflétant sur les deux sculptures offre une luminosité chaude, adoucissant l'effet de la glace et contrastant avec l'environnement aux tonalités froides. La matière de la jarre et des haricots fait d'ailleurs plus penser à du marbre que de la glace. Les sujets, ici décentrés; sont très bien mis en valeur.

Hey Paul;

I always wondered what folks did in the eastern provinces while we were sculpting sand castles... hahaha.
Amazing work, that's for sure.
Shame you weren't able to capture the top of the archway for the figure on the left. A small point on an otherwise good shot.

What effect does the B+W Haze filter have Paul? Does it work somewhat as a polariser- toning down the highlights?
