Photographer's Note
This is a view from the top of Saltburn bank. I dont think its a particularly great photo but thoguht that this view goes hand in hand with some of the photos of the pier and clifflift I have taken in the past.
As you can see the whole of the pier is in view a well as the clifflift station which I featured in my "Lift to Town" photo.
You can just about see pipes running down the tracks which carry water, because the lift uses water displacement to travel up and down the hill.
I wanted to get a more central photo but this is as far along as I could get, the lift top has a station and then there was an old couple who seemed glued to the spot :P
Tried my new UV filter and polariser out on this shot, Im still not entirely sure why and when I shoudl be using them and I cant remember which one this was taken with. Any suggestions as to when they shoudl be used woudl be good, links to tutorial sites etc.

Quite an impressive shot with good colours and strong POV.
It's good you don't get a central view because it would have damage your perspetive.

Can you explain me one thing? What is there "behind" the picture? I mean, is this an artificial bank or... I can't figure out why they needed to build this (spectacular) lift.
Technically, what disturbes me a bit is the slight rotation of the horizon. Good colours & contrast.
I don'y have a UV filter, the say it is not necessary with digital (?). I often use the polarizer. In this picture, it is not necessary. From the shadows I can see that the sun was behind you. The polarizer works well when the sun is at 90° from the line of sight. In these cases, the sky gets a lot darker, given that you rotate it properly (try with the filter in front of your eyes, and don't reverse it: the thread has always to stay on the rear side). Don't use it with very wide fields, since the effect is not homgeneous.
Another situation where the polarizer is useful is when you need to see through a reflecting surface, such as water or glass. If the line of sight is about 45 degrees to the surface, you will be able to see through, without annoying reflections. In this picture, rotating the polarizer would have made different effects on the sea surface. Anyway, always remember to rotate the polarizer properly.

Very nice prespective. I feel like sliding down the track to the water. interesting pattern of the lights on the side railings. I am not sure what they are used for. The water looks inviting. Good picture.

Hi Mark,
Interesting shot from this angle. Very nice perspective and beautiful colours. Sorry, but I can not advise you on the filter/polarizer matter since I am also trying to figure out how to use them correctly. Well done.

Hi Mark, good photo, nice strong colours and sharp too. I think it would have looked better if you'd been able to look straight down the track, it would have given a nice perspective as the track went off into the distance.
But it would probably be hard to get a track-on shot unless you were stood in the other carriage maybe, but that would probably have to be through glass, as I doubt they let you stand on the track.
Good photo considering how limited you were with the position.

Great shot Mark, there's quite a few shots on here with the clift on but none which show it as good as this. The strong lines flow all the way through the picture, right up to the end of the pier.

Hi Mark,
Congratulations on confusing viewers - some of them can't think of the lift's purpose and some think you took it from a - train.
Anyway, it's hard to get a centered shot here unless you bribe a lift attendant and climb up onto the station's roof or ask him to open the back door while both carriages are on their way up/down... lol
Pretty high tide provides a nice blue BG here and your POV creates an interesting line we follow from the point you stand and on its way down and over the pier.
Colours are great as is contrast.
I would answer your questions about filters and give you a tip or two, but don't know if you use ones that are to be screwed onto your camera lens or you use a filter holder and slide in square-shaped filters in it?

Bonjour Mark,

Wheee! I feel like I want to slide down the track. Very good POV, sharp and colorful. The write-up is very informative. TFS.

Hey Mark,
What a great shot! This is an astounding POV, and you have captured the red tram perfectly. I like the sensation of height here. The clarity and detail are also remarkable. The colourful buildings and water in the distance are very enhancing. I'm not very technically wise on UV filters, but I can tell you that I use my polarizer for virtually every shot. Whatever you did, this is first rate and also rather "painterly." Well done.

Hi Mark,
But it is a great photo! Wonderful POV that shows the pier and the lift from a totally different angle. I like the colours and the perspective as well! Very good picture.

hey mark, as you know i took a very similar shot! i like the effect that you got with the deeper blue on the sea too, and the colours are richer in yours, i think maybe due to your polorizer? nice shot! :)

This peir always takes a good photograph - you have chosen to view it slightly to one side which is different from most photoes taken of this pier. The weather is nice and clear which helps the image.

Yeah this one is good too. It is more bright and ne can see much more details. Cloning out the few people on the bridge could make it even more pleasant :) greetz
PS: is this the same place??? where is the beach here or this shot is done in the winter when the water is closer to the shore?
