Photographer's Note

This man works at an auto parts shop in the city of Ibb. He is taking a long qat and cigarrette break.

Qat leaves come from a shrub and have a stimulant effect after chewing the leaves for a while. The way it works is you have to chew the leaves and store them in one cheek for a long period of time, and then spitting the resulting green substance.

It seems as if the majority of the male population in Yemen (at least in the western and northern areas) is addicted to quat chewing.

Qat growing now takes up a large part of the agricultural land in Yemen and takes up 40% of the water usage in Yemen.

The average yemeni man spends around 6 USD per day in Qat. This can represent up to 70% of a family's income.

While in Yemen, I couldn't stop wondering, how it is that most people live in Yemen considering this expenditure.

Furthermore, its amazing how the country can function when most people stop work in the afternoon gor long periods of time in ordr to get their qat fix.
